YIELDS
This toolkit allows for inclusion of the following crops: Fruit, Vegetables, Nuts, Eggs, Herbs, Fish, Honey and some meat
Cereals and Dairy are considered larger systems better suited to peri-urban areas, feeding into a city’s food system, therefore are not included in this toolkit
There is potential to eat the meat of the birds kept for eggs (chickens, ducks, quail), but that yield has not been included here
Yields of a tree, shrub or perennial are taken as a guide from Martin Crawford’s Forest Garden book (www.agroforestry.co.uk)
Annual vegetable or herb production is taken from Mark Ridsdill-Smith’s  (www.verticalveg,org.uk) balcony project
Egg and Meat yields are taken as a guide from John Seymour’s Self-Sufficiency Guide, Dorling Kindersley 2003
LAND AREA REQUIRED
Historically an allotment was 250m2 (rough size of a double tennis court) and expected to feed a family of 4
Therefore, when incorporating urban food production systems, assume 62.5m2 of food production space per person, for full provision of the crops listed above
